World Blood Donor Day: People Advised to Practice Habit of Regular Blood Donation

As world blood donor day is celebrated around the Globe with the Theme “Donating blood is an act of solidarity, Join the effort and save lives”, people have been advised to practice the habit of donating blood regularly to help save lives and in turn keep their systems healthy.

Speaking with Planet News, senior lecturer at the University of Calabar teaching Hospital, Dr Victoria Udoh said that donating blood is an act of solidarity, where individuals get to donate blood to others for the purpose of saving lives, describing the celebration as a means of creating awareness of the need to store blood in the blood banks for future use.

Further speaking with our correspondent, Isaiah Udoh, the medical practitioner sighted 2005 as the first celebration of the event organized by World Health Organization and the Red Cross Society to highlight its importance and benefits of the need to donate blood and to ensure that everyone who needs transfusion has access to safe blood, adding that an effective blood donor programme should be made available to educate the public.

World Blood Donor Day, celebrated every 14th June, is a day set aside to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and blood products, as well as thanking voluntary blood donors for their life-saving gift of blood.
